Nearly 40 years ago, the Congressional
Medal of Honor Society created awards to honor individuals who
exemplify patriotism and altruism. These tributes have been bestowed
on notable Americans, among them former President George H.W. Bush,
President Ronald W. Reagan, and William Coors of Denver. The
presentation of the awards is the culmination of the Society's
annual convention. The national awards bestowed by our nation's most
esteemed heroes recognize notable individuals in the following
categories: Patriotism, Media and Entertainment.
Since the first award presentation in 1968, the Society has
instituted three other awards that are presented during the
ceremony:
Clint Eastwood will be accepting the Bob Hope Award for Excellence
in Entertainment, which recognizes Americans who have favorably
portrayed the United States military either in film or literature,
and who have a distinguished themselves in the entertainment world.
For Excellence in Journalism, an award is presented in the name of
John Reagan "Tex" McCrary for outstanding career achievement. Ben
Stein will be accepting this award for 2008.
The Distinguished Citizenship Award pays tribute to individuals who
have made significant contributions to their communities and to
their fellow man and our nation. This year, there will be two
recipients: Philip Anschutz and Bill Daniels (posthumously).
